Description

A character from this year's nano novel. I am hoping to add a background to it at some point.

An excerpt from Ashes Fall:

As the flames died and the fighting ended, Faron Duriel stood on the steps of the Palace, his clothes and skin darkened by dirt and soot and blood, watching the ashes fall on the city that bore the burden of their name. For Kosha, he said to himself, and for the all the rest, for Tristan, Jatya, my mother, my father, Uncle Alberic, Aleric, Rafa, Yanir, Amery, and Matin. He said a silent prayer to Gata, hoping if not believing that there really was a next world where their souls could rest in peace.
Before him a crowd was gathering, their clothes torn and stained with blood, the blood that would bring them their freedom. There were men, women, and children, people who never should have held a weapon. The words they spoke started out soft and low, a dull hum that grew as the crowd did until their words echoed off the very walls of the city. “Long live King Faron!” they shouted, “Long live King Faron!”
A simple life, he thought to himself; it was all he and Kosha had ever wanted, a simple life and now all of this. He knew what he had to do. Jari had fought for it and Sylas had died for it. Spreading his arms out before him, he attempted to calm the growing masses. Then, taking a deep breath, he spoke.
“This!” he pointed at the burning palace behind him. “This is for all those who have lost their lives to this endless war, and for all those who have managed to come through it unscathed. The time of Kings and Dukes and debt and corruption is over. You have ended it! And I am proud to stand among you.” He noticed Maera as she pushed her way through the crowd, making her way to the front. He looked down at her and smiled. “And for Sylas Welles,” he said, “whom I am coming to know was a far better man than I thought. His death is a tragedy to us all. And for another man,” he found Jari in the crowd, “for another man, who was bound and chained beside the rest of us, though he never should have been here at all. But he stayed and he fought beside us because this is what he believed in. And I believe in it too. Sylas Welles would have given this country back to its people and I intend to do the same. You call me King but I am no King and I never wanted to be. So do not call out ‘Long live King Faron,’ call out long live each other, because this is your time, and your country, and your freedom.”
