In Darkened Dreams_4 Laira
Laira took her son in her arms and hugged him tightly. Macon was home; she smiled to herself, and with such impeccable timing. Had he not returned at that exact moment she would have run out of options. As a result he could not express her gratitude enough so instead she continued to hug him until he complained of a lack of breath in his lungs. She set him back on the step he was on, her hands resting on his shoulders. He had grown up so much since he had left. He was taller now, and his shoulders had broadened like his father's. His face looked more gaunt and angular now too, harder, and his eyes, once bright and alive, seemed duller now, darkened by the horrors he must have seen. His jaw was covered by a thick, scratchy beard that had brushed up against her own cheek when they had embraced and his once golden hair seemed darker a well, though that may have merely been from the dirt and grime of war. Quinn too had grown up, now in his twentieth year. She took him i
In Darkened Dreams_3 Macon
Trudging through the remnants of an early spring snowfall, the Prince made his way through the Amman pass that traversed the southern peaks of the Nhara Mountains on his way back to Amador City, the King's city of Ethelia. The sun was beginning to dip in the western sky into a sea of brilliant orange clouds that gave a fiery glow to the ice and slush that covered the rock that surrounded him. His exhaustion from the past week's trek was making it hard for him to carry on at this pace for much longer, but he was so close to home now. Still, he knew they would have to make camp soon. He and his small contingent of soldiers would likely reach Amador before nightfall on the morrow but first they needed a rest.
Macon had received a bird from his father, King Magras, two weeks prior announcing the surrender of the Vardin army and requesting that he return home immediately. It did strike him as odd that peace had come so suddenly. The Vardin from what he had seen were a de
In Darkened Dreams_2 Theran
Theran Faceby was bent over the ground, rough hands burying tiny seeds in the soft soil. The rain clouds in the sky had dissipated leaving only the hot sun bearing down on his sore and aching back. He lifted his right hand from the ground and reached around, placing it on the small of his back and rubbing the area as he grimaced in pain. The entire morning he had been out in the fields planting and he was exhausted. Rocking back on his heels, he forced himself up. Too quickly, he realized as he put a hand to his spinning head. He glanced down at the ground again and allowed his eyes to scan the field. The row he stood at was almost finished. Sighing, he crouched back down and continued his work, digging a small hole in the dirt and placing in a seed and then covering it up. Again and again, he did this as methodically as ever.
Theran had always been a hard, determined worker. He had to be, the circumstances in his life demanded it. At seven he had
In Darkened Dreams_1Chapter One
The darkness was all around him, within him. It embraced him first, feeling somewhat familiar only to then begin to push and pull at him, closing in on him. Darkness had never been a stranger to him, not a friend either, but a constant in his life, but not here. Here his world was bright and vivid and full of light and clarity. It was different now though, the darkness seemed to take on a personality of its own, it was no longer merely a neutral, ever present observer. It had such a presence, such a force that he could feel it encroaching on his mind. In fact he could hardly detect any sense of himself anymore. The darkness seeped in and his thoughts began to bleed out and blend with it until they faded away and he was left with nothing. He was nothing anymore, just part of the darkness.
A loud, harsh pitch wrenched him from one dark world into another, where he lay, writhing in his bed, drenched with sweat with his mouth open and his vocal chords str
